SHORT CV HUGO TIMMERMANS

Hugo Timmermans has been working as a independent designer since 1992.

His first company, under the name Hugo Timmermans, was a combination of a wood-working place with a design studio. Most products submerged from experiment. Because he designed as well as produced all products himself, his knowledge on materials and insight in production-techniques grew rapidly. He sees this period as an extension of the process of becoming a complete designer, a process started at his education on the Academy for Industrial design Eindhoven, where he graduated in 1992.
In this period he won several Dutch design prizes, like the Prize for Young Designers 1992 (forthe exam chair) and the Prize for the Best Dutch Furniture Design 1993 (for the Orange-Box Cupboard). Three of his designs have been part of the Droog Design Collection. Besides products he also designed interiors, like a bookshop in Bilthoven, the Netherlands.

In 1995 he started the design-duo OVAL together with Job Smeets. Besides designing products of which the ideas came from intensive research & development, they have worked with Studio Edelkoort and Droog Design on exhibition-design. Some of their work is shown in the Design Year Book 1997.

Since 1997 Hugo has been designing interior products which he produced and markets under the registered trademark Optic ®. The first collection was launched on the first Dutch Individuals-Show on the parking lot of Studio Mendini at the Salone del Mobile Milan '98. He has exhibited the Optic ® Collections at international design fairs since, such as Kortrijk '98 and London '98. The latest collection, the O-Collection, was first shown on the Optic ® Show, as a part of the Dutch Individuals Exhibition at the Spazio Consolo, Salone del Mobile Milan '99.

To find more time for designing Hugo has stopped producing the designs himself in 1999, he is now cooperating with international producers. Besides designing for Optic ®, he is currently also designing for other brands and international producers.
